Enhance Your Self-Discipline #1

*I'll no longer be posting motivational quotes weekly because I want to emphasize the importance of relying yourself rather than a temporary feeling of inspiration. Instead I'll be posting quotes as a reminder to enhance your self-discipline, to continually train your mind for the long term benefit of your life. Our habits, especially our mental ones are the key factor to having a happy, successful and fulfilled life.*

Enhance Your Self-Discipline:

“I don’t believe in motivation, I don’t believe that motivation actually exists and I don’t think that it is something that you can cultivate.

Motivation is just an emotional component of inspiration, fickle. And if you cultivate discipline, forcing yourself to do something even if you don’t want to, that’s how you get things done over a long period of time.

And it is so much more reliable than the emotional component of motivation.” -Burnie Burns

I’ve recently realized that relying on motivation can be unreliable as your habits can override those limited moments of inspiration. It’s quite easy to be inspired if you watch any of your heros/role models, however how many times does that inspiration get anything done? Sure, you’ll most likely be inspired to continue your art/career/passion, but eventually that inspiration fades away. The one solid piece of machinery you can count on in your mind is your habits, your self-discipline. The ability to be aware of your own emotions or actions and understanding to choose the behavior that best benefits you in the long run. Self-discipline helps you avoid choices that only benefit you in the short term with no real long term benefit. An example of this can be avoiding the choice to go home after work for that short term relaxation, but instead making a commitment to go to the gym and maintaining your health. Like any other skill we learn, self-discipline must be practiced routinely. One of the most important aspects of self-discipline is the ability to say no, to deny yourself to a follow pathway that doesn’t benefit you. Being able to say no to a party invitation knowing you have a test the next day. Denying someone to make bad influential choices that you’ll regret. You must be aware of what you truly want in life and not allow anyone ruin that dream. You are the only one that has true influence of where your life goes, so take control and act out your dreams.
