Motivational Quote of the Week:

"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." -Martin Luther King Jr.

On this day of celebration for Martin Luther King Jr. I wanted to share a quote that relates to the martial art experience. Throughout the journey of a martial artist they're faced with tremendous amounts of challenges and through these difficult hurdles the ultimate measure of the artist is created. Martin Luther King Jr. understood that in times of great difficulty our true nature is shown and only through those struggles can we expand our potential. When we are faced with a task much greater than ourselves we must create a greater version of ourselves to complete it. The process of creating a better version of ourselves can be seen within the martial art experience. Martial artists are required to achieve progressively greater challenges mentally and physically because its the only way to prepare themselves for the ultimate challenge, facing a life impairing situation. Martial artists submit themselves to rigorous training like sparring, an activity where you face down an opponent whose intention is to harm you, which is mentally and physically demanding. Through is rigorous training the artist further grows their character allowing them to face other life challenges more easily. Living a life of constant comfort and convenience doesn't allow a human being to complete great achievements. Martin Luther King Jr. lived a life of great challenges and controversy and in doing so became a man who invigorated the civil rights movements. We must not wish for an easy life, but instead wish for a difficult one that allows us to reach our greatest potential. Constantly challenge yourself and you'll reap the rewards of a greater life you'll be creating.
