January Events and Updates (Last Update: 1/30/17) Motivational Quote of the Week:
“There's a redemptive power that making a choice has rather than feeling like you're an effect to all the things that are happening. Make a choice. Just decide what it's gonna be, who you're gonna be, how you are going to do it. Just decide. And from that point, the universe will get out of your way." -Will Smith
Living life is about making choices that are important to you and going about them with your full effort. Don't allow yourself to take the easy route and be willing to challenge yourself. All our students have the ability to live the life they want because they're ....

Motivational Quote of the Week: "Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” -Confucius The greatest human quality is the ability to overcome great struggle. Ever since you were a young child learning to walk you’ve learned how to overcome struggle. Through constant practice you’ve fallen plenty, but yet you overcame your first hurdle living in this world. Though it’s obvious that in life we’re met with obstacles and must continue to achieve what was difficult. The process of moving past our comfort zone to complete a task that once was challenging, make us into more productive human beings. You must remember ....

    Motivational Quote of the Week:
"Accept responsibility for your life. Know that it is you who will get you where you want to go, no one else." -Les Brown
We must remind ourselves that we have the will and determination to live the life we want. Even when met with great stress we can not blame those around us. We must remember that no one can affect our lives more than ourselves. We can not wait around for our goals to come to us, as those goals can not become real unless we make it so. We all possess the ability to do tremendous things that can change the world around us. Realizing this ability can only be seen when we push ourselves past our comfort zone. When we witness ....

"Make it a habit to tell people thank you. To express your appreciation, sincerely and without the expectation of anything in return. Truly appreciate those around you, and you'll soon find many others around you. Truly appreciate life, and you'll find that you have more of it." -Ralph Marston
We teach plenty of habits to our students to make them confident leaders for our community. The one habit I want to focus on this week is appreciation and thankfulness. Being thankful for what you have reminds you to be humble because living in America we're given more opportunities than most people in the world. We're able to educate ourselves and pursue ....

    Motivational Quote of the Week:
"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." -Martin Luther King Jr.
We grow when we're faced with great difficulty because only through discomfort can we push through our limits. Living in our limits gives us comfort and convenience, the ease of living without stress and discomfort. However living in a state of ease can leave you with the expectation that life is easy. We must be willing to be in constant state of change. Where we live through discomfort to live a moment of calmness, only to repeat this process again. Creating a habitual ....

    Motivational Quote of the Week:
"Watch your thoughts, they become words. Watch your words, they become actions. Watch your actions, they become habit." -Laozi
I've always seen Martial Arts as whole body training, not only I'm I getting great physical exercise but I'm also disciplining my mind. Our habits don't start with our actions, but begins in our minds with intentions and thoughts. We must fully realize what we want in our minds before our actions can have any meaning. Training ourselves to be in control of my minds is extremely important to be successful throughout life. If we don't actively participate our habits will take over and we'll live our lives slaved to the ....

    Motivational Quote of the Week:
"Force has no place where there is need of skill." -Herodotus
Power is useless unless the holder has the skill to control it. Most martial artists understand that the first skill they need to master is body control. Learning to restrain body movement takes years of practice and consistent training. Being unable to control your body allows opportunities for the attacker to exploit. A disciplined martial artists is able to land pin point strikes and blocks to effectively stop their attacker. Believing power is the only attribute to improve will leave the lone martial artists vulnerable to a quicker and skilled attacker. Strength is an easy attribute ....

"Endurance is one of the most difficult disciplines, but it is to the one who endures that the final victory comes." -Gautama B.
Endurance is one of the most important aspects in many sports, as a professional athlete needs to be able to maintain a certain level of performance. Though some see endurance as mostly a physical aspect, focusing on increasing physical cardio and strength to improve their endurance. However I suggest that mental endurance is more important than the physical endurance of a person. I'm not suggesting that having only mental endurance is good enough, having both strong mental and physical capacity is important. I'm just ....

    Motivational Quote of the Week:
"In order to carry a positive action we must develop here a positive vision."- Dalai Lama
Our perspective is not only shaped by our actions, but also our habits of perceiving and reacting to the environment around us. Such that if we constantly saw the negative outcomes when met with a problem, we'll eventually create a habit that only sees the negative perspective. For when a habit starts it becomes extremely difficult for us to notice it, let alone be able to change something we think is normal. However, the normality of it occurs because we believe the way we think is unchangeable. Though we must realize most of our thinking process and ....

"Action may not always bring happiness; but there is no happiness without action." - Benjamin Disraeli
It's important for us to create habits that are productive to our own existence. For our own happiness is not going to be the same for everyone, we must be honest with ourselves and find purpose in life. As soon as you find your purpose or joy that comes from the work you do, you must act upon it no matter the outcome. We must accept that life isn't always going to give us a break or an easy ride. If it was really that easy to be successful then everyone wouldn't have problems, stress, failure and disappointment. This idea of failure might ....

Everyday is a given opportunity to improve your standard of living and overall happiness with life. For if we found ourselves in a habit of always leaving our responsibilities for the next day, we'll only put ourselves on a plateu which leads to no where. However if you stay on task upon every responsibility and able to keep at it consistently. The effort you used to stay on task will eventually disappear because it becomes a habit, in which you no longer need your brain to be responsible for it. "Yesterday is not ours to recover, but tomorrow is ours to win or lose." -Lyndon B. Johnson
I've seen this type of quote many times before and it's been said in different ways, but the message doesn't change. No matter what has happened through your day, you've got tomorrow to improve and change your environment for the better. However you should take into account that if you don't act upon tomorrow you'll put yourself in a cycle of procrastination. Believing that you'll always have tomorrow is a falsehood that you shouldn't follow full heartedly. Instead you should remember to improve upon the mistakes of yesterday and focus upon how you can win ....

" Don't choose to waste energy. - Never waste energy on worries or negative thoughts. All problems are brought into existence - drop them." -Bruce Lee
I personally struggled with anxiety when I was growing up through my teens and early adulthood. I would constantly be worrying of previous events in my life, asking myself what I could've done to create a different outcome. I created this mental thinking habit that was obsessed on worries and negative thoughts. It was until my college years that I realized the amount of time and energy I've wasted on my worries and negative thoughts. As it took quiet sometime to change my cognitive behavior, but ....

As time goes on we all need to evolve and adapt our skills to keep up with the times. For no skill can stand unchanged and remain the best without constant improvement. For example, the explosion of Mixed Martial Arts around the world in the last 20 years illustrates the evolution of Martial Arts. For the time before MMA, a lot of martial arts didn't contain other techniques from different arts. However with the introduction of MMA style fights, fighters started to realize they needed to train in various arts to counter their opponents style. This translated into martial arts schools teaching other techniques from different arts. As the reality of having a ....

Our state of mind is an extremely important aspect in our lives and if we are able to control it, then we'll be able to constantly improve ourselves. Your mindset are the habits and attitudes you've created through your lifetime that control how you perceive and react to the world. Sometimes our worst habits go by unnoticed because they've been a habit for so long we assume it's normal. This is why we must always be aware of our mental thinking process, which is the way we perceive new events and react to them. For example, if a child starts ....

    The Axe Kick
This kick I believe defines Tae Kwon Do quite well, it illustrates our leg control, speed and flexibility. The axe kick is the very first kick our students learn, for its a simple kick with no extravagant spinning or jumping. The target for this kick would be the head, collar bone and high chest. Though we consider this kick a high risk and high reward because leaving your leg up leaves you open to attack. The most important aspects of using the axe kick is timing and precision because if you fail to land the kick the opponent might be able to grab your leg or counter strike. Though I've always told my students if they master the axe kick, it could be one of the most ....

As Americans we're privileged to have some of the most futuristic and affordable technology at our fingertips. These devices were made to improve our lives and make our lives more enjoyable. However with such great abundance we must not forget that not every new device or technology will give our life substance. To be able to have a successful career or a fulfilling life we must have productive habits. Habits that have been instilled within us from our day to day actions. That's why it's important that we pursue our goals everyday, for our actions will become our habits. If we make progress on our goals everyday, we'll eventually create habits that'll help us complete our goals. " Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going." -Jim Rohn

This week I wanted to keep it simple and focus upon what truly drives you towards your goals. For the first step is being motivated to pursue a goal, our motivations will differ upon the individual because we all have different perspectives in life resulting in different pursuits of happiness. As soon as we've found our goal and motivation, its upon our habits that'll dictate whether we actually complete those goals. Though initially its quite easy to actively pursue our goals because our motivation is fresh in our minds. However after awhile depending on our big ....

Our outlook on life has lots do with how we see the world, for the more impossible feats I may witness or take part in will change my perception of whats possible. Increasing the limits I place upon myself and others, however its important that I experience an impossible feat to truly understand how it can be done. As its too easy to go on the internet and find thousands of amazing feats on video, but I'll only understand the climax of that feat and not experience or witness the work it took to get there. Motivational Quote of the Week:
"Understanding fear - To understand your fear is the beginning of really seeing." - Bruce Lee
This is one of my favorite quotes from Bruce Lee because its the most straightforward way of expanding your limits. For fear is a limit upon your experience in this world, though it has been keeping the human race alive for generations. If we didn't have fear we'd be inclined to probably injure ourselves or hurt others. However its important to understand this emotion, for if we are able to control our fear we'd be able to achieve tremendous and even dangerous feats. For example, no person thought it would be possible to climb the highest mountain on ....

A successful and productive human being is someone that is completely self-sufficient who doesn't need the opinion of others to succeed. With so much hatred happening around the world and in our country, I want to remind everyone the importance of Kindness.
For our lives aren't endless and we're given only a brief moment in the universe to express ourselves. Hence it's important that every interaction we have with our fellow human being is left with kindness. As our kindness will help transform the perspective that person has upon the world. For if we're able to help inspire others to see the world in a brighter light they'll be able to inspire others to do the same. Because we can not let ....

Self-reflection is an important aspect of being able to improve yourself honestly. For if we assume nothing can be done to improve ourselves, than we are only limiting ourselves to that standard.
